Should you upgrade your smartphone every year?

From 2007, we have seen smartphone revolution in the world with iPhone. After that every company was involved and invested in R&D. Nokia was developing touchscreen based Symbian OS, Samsung is also introduced "Galaxy S" and "Note" smartphones. Symbian OS was not well optimised with the touch screen and where as Samsung Android based touchscreen phones were doing well in the market. Afterwards Nokia tried with Windows phone but failed because lack of Google and App support.

At the same time smartphone innovation was on top. Samsung produced super AMOLED, Apple was doing great with 4,5,5s lineup. Till 2018, smartphone companies were doing great with technology and pricing of the smartphone was also good.

After 2018, price of smartphone market is increased drastically and market was clattered with rebranded smartphones.

Now in 2023, price of the smartphone is increased by huge margin but no drastic improvement in the product. It is the same product with new processor, new screen size with big 5000 mah battery.

Previously Snapdragon was producing efficient processor but not it is changed. Snapdragon 888, 8 gen 1 were disaster. It has serious heating problem. Apple is also not doing great with "A" series of processors. Brightness is dropping after extensive game or video recording due to heating problem.

In my opinion, we should not change our primary smartphone frequently. Snapdragon 865, 870 were a great processor. If you are using smartphone with those processor, do not change your phone. Samsung Galaxy S10 lite, Galaxy S20 FE(other phones with those processor) are getting frequently update from Samsung. If you are upgrading those smartphones, it is not upgraded, it is downgrade either. As a average consumer, it is not worth the upgrade and not value for money as well.
